Beau’s Strong Patrick first of Wild Oats Series to see national distribution

Looking like Beau’s is adding another beer to their Canadian wide distribution, and this time it is a beer in the Wild Oats Series. Strong Patrick, an Irish-style red ale will be joining Lug Tread in 7 provinces.  Strong Patrick is available now at LCBOs across Ontario, as well as dépanneurs and grocery stores in Québec, as well as many bars and restaurants in both provinces.

(VANKLEEK HILL – Feb. 3, 2017) FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Beau’s Brewing Co. is following up Canada-wide distribution of its flagship Lug Tread Lagered Ale in 2016 with wider distribution of its Wild Oats Series, beginning with Strong Patrick Irish-style red ale. Strong Patrick will be available in 7 of 10 Canadian provinces beginning this February, as a limited-edition two-month release.

British Columbia, Alberta and Manitoba will have it retailing by the bottle in those provinces, with limited quantities on draft at craft-friendly establishments. Nova Scotia and New Brunswick will see it tapped as well at restaurants and pubs this month. First brewed in 2015, Strong Patrick has to-date been available only in Ontario, Québec and New York State, where it has been well received.

Luscious and malty, Strong Patrick is a strong barrel-aged interpretation of a traditional Irish-style red ale. Part of each batch was aged in whiskey barrels, and then reintroduced to add subtle wood and vanilla nuances. It has the toasty caramel and toffee notes characteristic of the style, complemented by whiskey flavours and alcohol warmth imparted by the barrel-aging process. Like all Beau’s beer, it is certified organic.

In addition to the first-time availability in western and eastern Canada, Strong Patrick is available now at LCBOs across Ontario, as well as dépanneurs and grocery stores in Québec, and numerous draft locations as well in those provinces. Beau’s is set to kick off their five-week midwinter celebration features a brand new beer released every week. First beer will be in celebration of annual International Gruit Day on February 1. FeBREWary series launches with brand new gruit tripel “Triceratops Tripel” and Beau’s yearly celebration of centuries-old brewing tradition of using herbs, spices and other botanicals to create inventive new recipe

(VANKLEEK HILL – Jan. 31, 2017FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Since 2013, Beau’s Brewing Company has marked Feb. 1 as International Gruit Day. The event plays double-duty as both Beau’s celebration of the ancient technique of brewing gruit ales – and the official launch of its feBREWary series that introduces one brand new beer every week for the month of February.

Beau’s feBREWary series is a month-long winter beer celebration put on across Ontario and Québec by the local craft brewery. Details can be found at www.beaus.ca/febrewary.

In its five years, International Gruit Day has inspired participation from craft breweries as far as The Netherlands and as near as Casselman, Ont., and many places in between. The 2017 edition is no different, garnering its highest rate of participation among craft breweries to date, with several satellite events across Canada and the United States.

To mark the occasion, the Beau’s team will be gathering to raise a glass of the independent craft brewery’s new gruit tripel, Triceratops Tripel, at its retail shop at noon EST on Feb. 1, 2017. More than 35 craft breweries (and counting) from all over will be joining Beau’s via the hashtag #gruitday – which generated 1,350,159 Twitter impressions in 2016 (almost double that of the previous year). The 2017 edition is poised to make the biggest impact yet.

“We are excited to be celebrating the 5th annual International Gruit Day with new and old friends!” says Beau’s co-founder Steve Beauchesne. “Gruits connect us to our past and are a cool way to appreciate history, as well as creating the future of craft beer.”

Brewed specifically for this occasion, Triceratops Tripel features an assortment of organic botanicals including bog myrtle, dried heather flowers and lavender. Like all Beau’s beers, this hazy pale yellow ale is certified organic. The tripel is a relatively new style of beer, originating in the Trappist breweries of Belgium. Triceratops Tripel is spicy, herbal and fruity. At 9.0% alc./vol., its finish lends a lasting warmth.

This new beer will be on draught at more than 250 restaurants and pubs in Ontario and Québec, and sold by the bottle at approximately 75 Québec retailers, as well as at the Vankleek Hill, Ont. brewery, for a limited time starting Feb. 1. A new beer will be released weekly each following Thursday in February.

Gruits take inspiration from centuries-old brewing tradition; a time before the Bavarian Purity Act of 1516 that declared that all beer be made solely with barley, hops, and water. In gruit ale, herbs, spices and other botanicals replace a dominant hop character, throwing open the door to experimentation with flavour and beer terroir.

Since the arrival of its first gruit, Bog Water, in 2008, Beau’s has led the charge in raising awareness of the style; and with the release of St. Luke’s Verse for the first gruit day in 2013, fellow craft breweries have rallied around Beau’s in marking Feb. 1 as the official international day of celebration.

It’t that time of year again! Summer is almost over which means it’s time for the two-day fall festival of Bavarian proportions happen at Beau’s in Vankleek Hill. The festival in its 8th year has grown year over year and this year should be no different. Starting July 25th single day tickets are on sale. So if you plan on going get your tickets fast as last years Saturday was a sell out.

There are plenty of ways to get there with bus transportation and also if you’re looking to make a weekend out of it camping space is available. Tons of great acts will be on stage all weekend including 2016 Juno nominee k-os.  The festival will have biggest craft beer line-up in festival history, with 16 different Beau’s beers, 40 guest brewery taps, gluten-free beer and craft cider will also be available.

(VANKLEEK HILL – July 25, 2016) FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Beau’s Brewery is kicking off single-day ticket sales today for the 8th annual Beau’s Oktoberfest, a two-day fall festival of craft beer and Bavarian culture held in Vankleek Hill, the small village where the local craft brewery is located. Last year’s event attracted nearly 19,000 festival goers over two days, with a sell-out crowd on Saturday.

Set for September 23rd and 24th, this year’s mainstage lineup will feature iconic Canadian rockers 54•40 and Toronto indie musicians Born Ruffians on Friday, and 2016 Juno nominee k-os and Vancouver singer/songwriter Hannah Georgas on Saturday. Additional entertainment includes Fast Romantics, Motel Raphaël, and Gazoline. Canada’s Polka King Walter Ostenek and his accordion will be back again to supply traditional German music during the day. The 2016 edition of Oktoberfest will have the biggest craft beer line-up in festival history, with 16 different Beau’s beers flowing on tap at bars set up throughout the festival grounds, and more than 40 guest breweries supplying a keg of their finest in the Craft Haus area. Gluten-free beer and craft cider will also be available.  28 Ontario and Québec restaurants will be on hand to serve up a vast selection of Bavarian-inspired cuisine.

As in previous years, round trip bus transportation is available from Montréal, Ottawa, and Cornwall – this year guests can also choose to upgrade to coach buses for an additional fee. Camping space has been expanded for this year, and in addition to onsite food options, the camp area will show an outdoor movie on Friday and Saturday nights. Camping space is limited and must be pre-registered. Tickets are also now on sale for School of Bock sessions, a series of seminars exploring the world of craft beer with guest speakers and brewers. Sign-up is open for select onsite activities too (malt sack races, sausage eating, and partner-carrying).

Oktoberfest is Beau’s signature fundraising event, and this year total dollars raised is expected to top half a million dollars. On that theme, registration is underway for the United Way Charity Bike Ride to Beau’s Oktoberfest. Riders receive a custom Beau’s cycling jersey and free bus transportation back to their departure location (Ottawa, Bourget or Cornwall), with additional perks to top fundraisers. New for 2016 is Gigs4Good, a contest that gets bands to fundraise for Ottawa- and Montréal-based charities with a top prize of three paid gigs in 2017: Pouzza Fest, Ottawa Explosion Weekend, and Beau’s Oktoberfest Black Forest Stage.

Adult admission to the festival is $32; 2-day passes are $45, and kids passes (18 and under) are $5. The ticket includes a voucher for your first beer or other beverage, and the first 2,000 people through the gate each day will receive a souvenir alpine hat. (VANKLEEK HILL – July 8, 2016) FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – Eastern Ontario craft brewery Beau’s All Natural has begun distribution of its award-winning Lug Tread Lagered Ale across Canada. Two east coast provinces, New Brunswick and PEI, now have Beau’s Lug Tread available, and sales will launch in Manitoba next week. Beau’s has already made its portfolio available in Québec for more than a year, and plans are in place to add Alberta and British Columbia this summer to the list of provinces Beau’s Lug Tread is available.

Lug Tread is a German-inspired hybrid beer style Beau’s has dubbed a “lagered ale” – meaning that it is brewed with ale yeast, but then cold-aged like a lager, giving it light ale notes complemented by a lager-like crispness. Since its launch in 2006, the versatile golden ale has garnered more than 20 local and national awards and distinctions, including 4-times Gold at the Canadian Brewing Awards, and 7-times Best Beer in Ontario at the Golden Tap Awards. Like all Beau’s beer, Lug Tread is certified organic, and brewed with local spring water at the family-run brewery in Vankleek Hill, Ontario.

“We are excited to be able to add Beau’s to the selection of great craft beer already available in these provinces,” says Beau’s co-founder Steve Beauchesne. “Craft beer drinkers are always happy to have more choice, and we know from our fans in Ontario and Québec that Lug Tread is something truly special. It’s got lots of flavour to enjoy, but at the same time it’s crisp and finely balanced. It’s really the best qualities of an ale and a lager in one fantastic beer.”

As noted, New Brunswick and PEI will have Lug Tread on shelves of local beer sellers right now, and Manitoba is expected to have it available next week. In addition to Lug Tread, Beau’s popular “Wild Oats” and “Farm Table” series of beers will see some distribution as well into these new markets. Distribution of Beau’s in the east will be handled by Eisenhauer Agencies, in BC and Alberta by UnTapped Craft Imports, and in Manitoba by Eclectic Beverages. Steve Beauchesne expects to have Beau’s in 8 of 10 provinces by year-end, with distribution fully Canada-wide by the end of 2017.

Cross-Canada distribution represents a major change of plans for Beau’s, who had previously stated an intent to keep its beer within a one-day drive of the brewery. Beauchesne notes that his rationale is a reaction to changes in the craft beer landscape in Canada, and his concern for its future. “With the recent and sudden acquisitions that the ‘hyper-mega’ breweries have made of strong Canadian craft breweries, we became quite concerned that with only a small handful of national independent craft breweries, the whole industry is at risk of being commoditized. Our commitment to staying regional made us part of the problem. We’ve made this expansion to make sure that there are strong voices on a national level for craft beer in this country.”

The cross-Canada expansion is part of a series of big announcements Beau’s is making as part of its 10th birthday celebrations this year. On July 1, 2016, Beau’s began the process of making its 160 employees into owners of the brewery through an ESOP, and in early June announced its partnership as the official brewery of Ottawa 2017, a major celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday taking place in the National Capital Region. Happy Pilsner (Beau’s Brewery)

This review is of Happy Pilsner, which is my second beer from the Beau’s Oktoberfest pack. Like the name says, Happy Pilsner is a pilsner, no brainer right? Beaus’s first brewed this traditional lager for their 2010 Oktoberfest party, so 4 years later they were very happy for this beer to return.  My love for pilsners had me excited to try this beer and compare it to some of my other favourites.

Happy Pilsner (I’m just going to call the beer “happy” so I’m not saying pilsner so much) came in the Beau’s traditional 600ml bottle with beautiful label art. The beer poured a hazy pale blonde colour with a thick, pure white head. Once the beer was in my glass, I instantly noticed very floral/herbal notes. It was almost like I was smelling a freshly steeped camomile tea. “Happy” had a bouquet of aromas coming from it. Not only did I smell the floral/herbal notes, I also noticed notes of lemon and grassy aromas which finished off with sweet honey. In all, it was a great smelling beer that had a great freshness to it.

My first sip did not disappoint…. you could say I was pretty happy. Right away I tasted the herbal notes that I noticed in the smell. It honestly tasted like I was drinking a cold camomile tea. That quietly changed into a slightly more bitter, yet citrus palette. The beer was not overly bitter and was not an over powering citrus flavour, but yet it was well balanced with the herbal notes and the bittering effects. I noticed that the mouthful of the beer did leave a dry, almost champagne effect on my cheeks. “Happy” has great lacing down the glass, and retained a thin, white head, right down to the last drop.

My overall impression of this beer was very happy. As I said before, being a pilsner fan, I was very excited to try this beer and I was not disappointed at all. I would definitely recommend this not only to people that like pilsners, but to anyone because the beer was very enjoyable and easy drinking. So, if you can still get your hands on the Oktoberfest Mix Pack at your local LCBO or you’re lucky enough to get to the brewery, do it! You won’t be disappointed.

Dial “Z” for Zwickel (Beau’s Brewery)

This review features a beer from the Beau’s Oktoberfest mix pack. It will be one of four reviews I will be posting, as I drink my way through the pack.  Dial “Z” for Zwickel is a zwickelbier style beer which is,  as the Beau’s website states, “Closely related to kellerbier, zwickelbier literally means beer sampled directly from the maturation vessel in the beer cellar. This German-origin beer takes on the character of the base style: in the case of Dial ‘Z’, an amber lager.”

Dial “Z” poured a a dark copper colour with a hazy clarity to it. The beer had no visible settlement at the bottom of the glass or during the pour. Once poured into the glass, I instantly noticed the freshness of this beer. Right off the bat, I could smell lemon grass notes with a sweet smell of bread/yeast. I also noticed light hints of caramel aromas. The beer poured with a very think head in my stein, which faded out to a thin off white colour. The head left little lacing on the glass as I drank the beer.IMG_6981

At first taste, I experienced fresh lemon grass and citrus notes. There was not a lot of bitterness to Dial “Z”, but had more  sweet bread and yeast notes. The beer was a medium body, with a light creaminess to it. The beers carbonation really brought out the freshness of the beer, and helped bring out all the flavours. Dial had a dry finish to it but the dryness did not take away from how fresh this beer really was.

My overall impression of this beer was amazing. It was something I really enjoyed and never experienced before. The freshness of the beer really blew me away. It was easy drinking and definitely a beer I wish I could get my hands on year round. So, if you can find the Oktoberfest Mix Pack at your local LCBO or your lucky enough to get to the brewery, be sure to go and pick up a couple to try for yourself.
